We usually take care of all aspects related to our hygiene, but on many occasions we do not do the same with oral hygiene. In order to maintain oral health in perfect condition, it is necessary to keep in mind in our daily habits a good proper cleaning and hygiene for our teeth.
Even the little ones have to learn that the habit of a mouth cleaning is necessary to avoid the triggering of multiple diseases that can severely affect both the teeth, the tongue, the palate and even the gums.
We want to give you the best guidelines to follow so that you include in your daily hygiene habits the necessary elements to maintain the best oral cleaning.
Why is daily cleaning important?
The bacteria are established on the tooth surface in less than 24 hours after removal. Therefore, the teeth should be brushed three times a day , after each meal. Although it will be necessary that the most exhaustive brushing is done at night , before going to sleep.
Bacterial plaque sticks to the teeth and it will not be enough to rinse the mouth to remove it. For this, it is necessary to have a correct brushing technique and include the use of dental floss in our daily oral hygiene routine and, in the interdental spaces that are more open, use an interproximal brush.
Bacterial plaque, although it may appear invisible, will become more pronounced in the absence of oral hygiene . With the absence of this, a process of calcification of the plaque will be reached when it comes into contact with the calcium salts that food contains and our salvage, thus turning into tartar.
The bacteria that accumulate in the mouth if we do not have a correct oral cleaning in mind can be of different species , but depending on which one predominates, the results will be very different:
If bacteria, when metabolizing sugars, produce basic substances that cause inflammation and destruction of the periodontium, they will thus cause periodontal disease.
If bacteria predominate that, by metabolizing sugars, produce acids, the end result will be the appearance of cavities .
Maintaining good care of our teeth through daily oral cleanings will make us develop adequate prevention against diseases that can appear if we do not do it.
For this, it will be necessary that we use a suitable toothbrush, and change it every three months. Normally, it is advisable to use a brush with medium-hard bristles, although in some cases, such as those with tooth sensitivity , it is more advisable to use one with soft bristles so as not to cause the gums to retract.
Brushing technique is important and necessary
To be as effective as possible in removing bacterial plaque and food debris, it is essential to perform a correct technique. Therefore, we must take into account a series of tips to be able to apply it well.
As we have already mentioned, oral cleaning should be done after each meal, at least three times a day, because it prevents tartar from accumulating on both the external and internal dental surfaces.
In order not to leave any area uncleaned, it is advisable to always follow the same order and always do it in the same way:
- Place the brush head in a horizontal position , with an inclination of 45º above the plane of the teeth.
- Brush with vertical movements (up and down) and vice versa . If they brush with horizontal movements we can damage the gum and run the risk of retracting it.
- Use the same technique for the lingual aspect of the teeth.
- Repeat these steps with the lower jaw.
To clean the dental areas where we chew , we must brush horizontally with short movements from back to front repeatedly.
It will also be necessary to properly clean the tongue from front to back several times, because many bacteria also accumulate in this area.

Increase your hygiene by flossing
Oral hygiene doesn’t end with brushing. Flossing and rinsing will be necessary for optimal cleaning. As we know, using the brush we cannot reach the interdental areas, so it will be necessary to floss through these areas to reinforce the cleanliness of brushing and better eliminate bacterial plaque.
To use dental floss correctly, cut about 18 inches of floss and wrap it around the ring fingers , leaving about 2 inches to use .
